Why Peat free?
What is peat?
Peat is a partially decayed plant matter that accumulates in waterlogged conditions, forming peatbogs and is often used as a growing medium and soil conditioner in horticulture.
Why is peat so important?
The peatland ecosystem is one of the most efficient carbon sinks on the planet, storing up to 42% of all soil carbon whilst covering only 3% of land.
They are also a vital eco-system, providing unique habitat for many animals, plants and insects, as well as an effective flood management and water filtration.

Why is peat extraction so bad?
Commercial peat extraction occurs mainly on raised bogs to provide peat for gardening.
The mechanised peat removal has a major ecological impact. Not only does it destroy the unique and vital ecosystems, it also releases a great deal of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, greenhouse gases that contribute to the growing climate crisis.
Why is it so important to buy ‘peat free’ compost and plants?
Peat takes a long time to form (roughly 1000years for just 1 meter of peat, however nearly three million cubic meters of peat are currently sold for horticultural use every year in the UK, one third of which comes from UK peatlands.
The main users are amateur gardeners (66%), followed by industry (34%) and a small percentage by local authorities (<1%) (Defra 2010).
Buying peat-free plants for your garden
The best way to reduce the demand for peat is by buying vegetables and plants grown in peat-free compost.
All the food and plants we sell are Five Acre Farm are grown without chemicals in 100% peat free soil and compost, using regenerative agricultural practices.
