Mel’s Coconut Dal

Mel shares her closely guarded recipe for this sumptuous coconut dal, otherwise know as “Roald Dal”!

You’ll find all of the ingredients in our farm shop on North Street, and why not pick-up some local craft beers to go with it. We have Good Chemistry, New Bristol Brewery, Lost & Grounded and Bristol Beer Factory on the shelves at the moment. Perfect combo to brighten up any gloomy January day…

Serves 4


  • 200g red lentils
  • 50g Hodmedod’s organic split yellow peas
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1.5 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tin of full fat coconut milk
  • 3 tbsp of vegetable oil
  • 1 large white onion, peeled and finely diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped or grated
  • 2 thumb-sized pieces of ginger, grated (leave the skin on)
  • 1 level tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds
